The fastback generation of Ford’s pony lineup is one of the iconic body styles of all time. Originally named for the fighter plane P-51 Mustang, Ford later just related the cars to the Mustang horse. This fastback was built in San Jose, California and spent most of it's early life in that state. The current owner's dad bought the car for her in 1987 and she has owned it ever since. Crisp lines, great details and the Vintage Burgundy color paint make this Mustang look like it just rolled off the showroom floor in 1965. Unfortunately the door tag has been lost over the years and we can't verify the color or much else other than that it is a factory 289.
New Goodyear Eagle tires are wrapped around the factory Ford wheels to provide plenty of grip. The burgundy color highlights the fastback's dramatic body design and the curves this car has all the way around. As for the interior, you get to see why this Mustang is called a “2+2”. The factory front bucket seats are as you would expect, and the rear seat is separated to look like 2 bucket seats also. In addition, the rear seat back folds down.
The cushioned front dashboard houses all the original gauges, all of which are in proper working order. The car has been modified with a modern day Kenwood stereo system with 2 speakers mounted in custom boxes that were added in the back. The rear seat back actually folds down and lays flat to provide more storage room under the hatch, but when folded up, it still provides plenty of room for two other passengers.
There is still plenty of kick left in this pony, it's been well taken care of by the current owner. You might want to add more modern luxury features, or just to simply leave it as is. No matter how you look at it, what we have here is a 1965 Mustang fastback which is an extremely popular Mustang model. The 4 speed transmission makes it even more desirable.
Moving to under the hood, there is some history of modification and then restoration in some ways. The original owner removed the factory “C” code 289 V8 engine, which was rated around 200 hp, and replaced it with a more powerful 302 cu. in. engine. When the current owner's dad bought her the car he asked if the seller would put the 289 back in it, which he did.
It may have been the original engine, but even if it was, over the years, the block developed a crack and was replaced with another 289 block. Chrome air cleaner and valve covers really add to the appeal of the engine compartment. The engine is bolted to a 4-speed manual transmission to really increase the thrill and drivability you would expect to have when driving any Mustang.
The trunk is clean and solid, complete with spare tire and mat. Underneath the body, the car looks fairly good. The floor pans appear to be original and in good condition as well as the rest of the undercarriage.
