We are proud to present this beautiful and classic example of Carroll Shelby's finest. The GT500 would be in its second year of production in 1968. This is a documented 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback ordered with the 428 CJ and sent to Shelby American for conversion to the GT500KR. The Cobra-Jet 428 equipped Shelby Mustang's were affectionately and fittingly known as "The King of the Road." The GT500 was deleted and replaced by the GT-500KR mid way through production in '68.
This special '68 Shelby was originally ordered to Ron's Ford Sales in Bristol, Tennessee.
This is one of 1,053 GT500KR Mustangs built in 1968. This Mustang was scheduled to be built on July 26th, 1968 was finished two days ahead of schedule on July 24th, 1968. In 1969 Shelby would end his agreement with Ford. Many '67 and '68 Shelby Mustangs were issued as '69 and '70 models under the watchful eye of the FBI.
The R-code 428 CJ engine was factory underrated at 335 horsepower. The 428 Cobra Jet engine was introduced on April 1, 1968. Based on the regular 428, the Cobra Jet included larger valve heads, an oil-pan windage tray and the race 427's intake manifold. With the Shelby modifications, the Lemans Cobra 428 was rated at 355 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs of toque, still quite conservative estimates. This example showcases the correct 428 matched to the C6 automatic transmission. The block is the correct 428 casting, stamped with C7ME-A. The C6 transmission is stamped AF-389P & 7A040-A. The rear end is identified with L1-RFC5AW-4668-C. Induction is courtesy of the correct Holley 4bbl. carbuetor (QC2875) atop the correct Ford/Shelby aluminum intake manifold (C7AE9425-F)
The factory Buck identification tag is intact as is the Shelby Identification plate. We also have the Marti Report and more for this Shelby.
Open the door to 1968. The interior features classic black knitted vinyl upholstery along with classic Shelby features including the badging, rim blow steering wheel, integrated roll bar, seat belts, and Stewart-Warner console gauges. This is the ORIGINAL interior. The body and drivetrain have been restored and show very well.
The glovebox door has been signed by Mr. Carroll Shelby himself.
This special padded roll bar and seatbelts are Shelby specific. The seatbelts were to be used in conjunction with the lap belts.
The Shelby Mustang was the first American car to feature a factory roll bar.
These rubber Shelby mats are still in plastic, they are simply to protect the carpeting.
The instruments features the optional 8,000 rpm Ford tachometer and the Shelby-specific Stewart-Warner console gauges.
This is the optional fold-down rear seating in factory black knit vinyl.
These fresh-air scoops & Ram Air breather assembly feed the healthy 428CJ engine.
These special Shelby mag wheels are wrapped in B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A tires on all 4 corners.
These special Lucas driving lights and twin scoop hood are prominent features of the '68 Shelby GT500 & KR version.
The Acapulco blue finish is in excellent condition, highlighted with the white Rallye stripes. This is one of 530 Mustangs ordered with this paint code and one of 432 with this trim combination. Only 523 '68 Mustangs were ordered with the 428CJ engine & C6 automatic transmission according to the Marti Report.
The GT500 is simply a legend, then and now.
The fastest Shelby of the time, these cars boasted superb handling, braking, and acceleration. Underhood suspension bracing helped make the car more rigid and staggered rear shocks helped prevent wheelhop. The undercarriage showcases special Shelby suspension as well as excellent original flooring throughout restored in red oxide.
