1972 would also be the first
year of NET horsepower ratings. The top optioned 454 engine was
rated at 270 horsepower. This example feature the correct 454
block (3999289 casting) mated to the TH400 Automatic
Transmission. You'll note factory air conditioning, power
steering, and power front disc brakes. It is dressed with the
360HP decal and runs out strong. This special cowl induction
hood was exclusive to the Super Sport cars. This car features
the fresh-air induction door and hood pins. The El Camino rides on a
116-inch wheelbase aided by the factory 15-Inch Super Sport
wheels wrapped in B.F. Goodrich Radial T/As sized at
P235/60R15s. Further inspection of the
exterior will reveal clean body panels throughout. The finish is
in very good condition and shows well with only minor
imperfections. There are chip touchups, primarily near the hood
hinge areas. A look down either side
reveals slick and straight body panels and alignment. These single headlights were
coined "Projector Beams." Revolutionary at that time, they were
utilized in place of the older style dual sealed beam
headlights. 1972 would also be the last year of the attractive
shorter bumper design. The '73 models grew substantially and are
not nearly as cool. They had huge "crash" bumpers. The bed is in exceptional
condition. Theres a "ding" to note on
the rear wheelwell, shown above. As you can see, the bed is
in exceptional condition on this dry climate El Camino. It is
further highlighted by the bright work trim along with bed
edges. This was one of the last
muscle machines! The next generation El Camino introduced in
1973 was a gargantuan version to say the least. Further inspection of the
interior will confirm it to be in good condition. The dash features Super
Sport exclusive instrumentation along with a bowtie cassette
stereo. These circular gauges were much more attractive than the
base speedometer assembly on non Super Sport cars. Always a Super Sport 454,
this is confirmed by the V.I.N. & date plate. The bucket seating shows
well, with a small fray on the driver's side bolster on close
inspection. The Strato Bucket Seating
was an available option. They are accompanied by a factory
center console assembly. The upholstery is in good condition
throughout. This includes the seating, door panels and
headliner. The carpeting shows fading in places, as seen above. Note the fit and finish of
this brilliant blue base/clearcoat finish. The exterior badging leaves
little doubt to this cars Super Sport heritage. A closer look at the engine
compartment will reveal solid original inner fender wells,
firewall, and core supporrt. The engine runs out strong. The air
conditioning blows cold. The AM/FM stereo works as it should.
This is a fun car to drive and handles well. Be sure to play the
video/sound clip to experience this car in action. The undercarriage features
the 10-bolt rear end along with a good solid undercarriage and
engine underside. The flooring shows minor patchwork on both the
drivers and passengers floor pans, photographed above. FEATURES INCLUDE 454 4bbl. V8 / 270HP+ TH400 Automatic Transmission Air Conditioning / Heat Power Steering Power Front Disc Brakes AM/FM Stereo Soft-Ray Tinted Glass Color-Keyed Remote Driver's
