This Mercedes-Benz 500SL Convertible has only accrued 48,747 miles since new. This proud SL is on display in our showroom. The 1996 to 1998 are widely considered the best SL Mercedes ever made. These quality built examples are far from the watered-down Daimler-Chryslers. These examples utilized the much improved 5-speed automatic transmission mated to the high performing quad cam V8 engine.

 

The SL designation dates back to the days of the 300SL Gullwing Mercedes. The German referred to SL as "Sport Leicht" or "Sport Light."  The R129 chassis replaced the long standing R107 SL class in 1989 and was produced until 2002.

 

 This beautiful '98 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Roadster has accumulated only 48, 747 original miles. This is a well maintained, garaged example ready to own, show, and enjoy.

This beautiful SL rides on these AMG Sport 18-Inch Wheels fitted with ultra-high performance Michelin Pilot Sport 235/40ZR18s up front and 265/35ZR18s in the rear.

 

 The interior displays the luxury and quality expected of Mercedes-Benz. The upholstery is in excellent condition as is the carpeting and interior panels. The instruments are functional as are the amenities. Remember, this car has less than 49,000 miles. It performs and shows as expected, thanks to its pampered low mileage condition.

 

The much improved 5-speed automatic transmission was introduced in 1996, replacing the 4-speed hydraulic automatic.

The parchment leather seating has been well-cared for. The driver and passenger seat are power operated 10 ways, heated, and have three memory functions.

Side Air Bags were first introduced to the SL in the 1996 models, this '98 is equipped with them as well as an automatic deployment rollbar.

The instruments work correctly throughout. The 1998 models boasted improved electronics along with computer predictions of service intervals.

The factory AM/FM cassette stereo system is accompanied by an optional 6-Disc CD changer mounted in the trunk.

We have the original owners manual, booklets, and window sticker.

The aluminum auxillary hardtop is in excellent condition, as is the headliner. We have a special pulley for easy garage storage and fitment as well as a padded hardtop stand for this car.

The power operated soft top is in excellent condition as well, seldom used.

The doors, hood, and trunk are correctly aligned, showcasing the quality engineering put into the SL line. This is a no-hit original example that drives beautifully.

 

The engine compartment proudly displays the all-aluminum V8 engine producing in excess of 315 horsepower. 1998 would be the last year of this high performing quad cam V8 engine. The 1999-2006 SL's utilized a lower performing single cam 3 valve V8 that yields identical fuel economy numbers to this examples higher performing V8. This is a well-maintained machine and performs as such. Closer observation will reveal clean and detailed engine panels and factory decals throughout. The original engine sound deadening material is still intact throughout as well.

 

The undercarriage is very clean and original throughout. This is a dry climate driven, garage kept example and it shows.

The trunk is clean and detailed throughout, complete with jacking equipment, the original tool kit, a hidden windscreen, and a factory 6-Disc CD changer.

The original spare tire/wheel and jacking equipment is in place as you can see above.

This is the factory windscreen. It fastens securely in the trunk when not in use.

 The Smoke Silver finish is in beautiful condition. The body panels are very straight and free of any "dings." The paint is very good to excellent with only minute imperfections to a keen eye.

 

The headlight washers work great. In 1997, all SL's received rain sensing wipers as well.
